Brachychiton populneus, commonly known as the kurrajong, is a small to medium-sized tree found naturally in Australia in a diversity of habitats from wetter coastal districts to semi-arid interiors of Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland. The extended trunk is a water storage device for survival in a warm dry climate.
One of our absolute favourite pods due its shape and excellent cave abilities.
These are the Western and Central Desert Kurrajong and therefore have a wider more bird-like shape than the boat shaped pod of the Eastern/Queensland kurrajong. These pods are not as common as the Queensland pod.
They're about (6-10cm in length and 3-4cm width) on average, These pods will leach some tannins into the water.
PREPARATION: You need to boil Kurrajong pods for at least an hour (sometimes a bit more) to really saturate them, because they do float like mad when first immersed.
