How to Keep, Care For and Breed Apistogramma
Apistogramma are one of our favourite groups of fish here at Blackwater Aquariums.
Small, colourful, full of personality and perfectly suited to a natural blackwater aquarium, these dwarf cichlids can be incredibly rewarding to keep. They also have some fascinating breeding behaviour, with females guarding caves, raising fry and fiercely defending their territory.
But like most fish, Apistogramma do best when we stop trying to keep them in a generic aquarium and instead build an environment that suits the way they live in nature.
That means soft water, low mineral content, gentle water movement, subdued lighting, fine sand, wood, leaf litter and plenty of hiding places.
This guide covers the basics of keeping, feeding and breeding Apistogramma, with a focus on creating a natural blackwater-style aquarium.
Understanding Apistogramma
Apistogramma are small South American dwarf cichlids found throughout parts of the Amazon basin and other South American river systems.
There are many different species, colour forms and locality types available in the aquarium hobby. While they share many characteristics, they should not all be treated as identical fish.
Some species are relatively peaceful, while others can become surprisingly aggressive, particularly when breeding.
Their natural habitats can also vary considerably. Many blackwater species are found in shallow areas with little water movement, soft water and large amounts of decomposing leaves and other organic material.
Tom Christoffersen's extensive field observations show just how important these environmental differences can be. Several Apistogramma he has collected have come from extremely soft, acidic blackwater with very low conductivity, while other species have proven capable of breeding over a considerably wider range of conditions.
The takeaway is simple:
Don't chase a number just because you saw it on a care sheet. Build the right environment for the particular species you are keeping.
Setting Up an Apistogramma Aquarium
You don't need a huge aquarium to keep Apistogramma.
In fact, a well-designed smaller aquarium can often be far more suitable than a large, empty tank.
The important thing is floor space, structure and territories.
A pair can potentially be kept in a relatively small aquarium when the tank is heavily structured, but larger aquariums give you much more room to create separate territories and reduce aggression.
For groups or species known to be more aggressive, bigger is definitely better.
Tom's observations show that some species can be kept successfully in groups when there are plenty of visual barriers and hiding places, while particularly aggressive species may require significantly more space or the ability to separate individuals.
Think natural rather than minimal.
A good Apistogramma aquarium should contain:
- Fine, smooth sand
- Aquarium wood and roots
- Leaf litter
- Caves and spawning sites
- Plants where appropriate
- Floating plants or other areas of shade
- Plenty of visual barriers
- Gentle water movement
- Relatively subdued lighting
The goal is to create a tank where the fish don't constantly see one another.
Wood, leaves and plants can divide the aquarium into multiple small territories. This is particularly important once breeding begins.
Why Fine Sand Is Important
Fine sand isn't just there to make the aquarium look good.
Apistogramma naturally spend a lot of time picking through substrate looking for food. They take mouthfuls of sand and sift the useful food particles from it before expelling the sand through their gills.
For this reason, a fine, rounded, non-sharp sand is an excellent choice for Apistogramma aquariums.
Avoid sharp gravel and very coarse substrates.
A natural sand bed also works extremely well with leaf litter, wood and botanicals.
And let's be honest ā an Apistogramma cruising over a natural sand and leaf-litter substrate just looks right.
Blackwater and Apistogramma
This is where things get interesting.
Many Apistogramma come from environments that are very different from the typical community aquarium.
Their natural habitats can contain extremely soft water with very low mineral content. Decaying leaves and other organic matter release humic substances into the water, producing the familiar tea-coloured appearance associated with blackwater.
This is exactly the type of environment we love at Blackwater Aquariums.
A blackwater aquarium isn't simply water that has been turned brown.
It is about recreating the entire environment.
That means:
Low minerals + natural botanicals + leaf litter + wood + subdued lighting + gentle flow + suitable tank mates.
Blackwater Aquariums describes this as recreating the physical characteristics and water chemistry of Amazonian blackwater, allowing organic material to naturally decompose and release tannins and other compounds into the aquarium.
Water Parameters
There is no single "Apistogramma water parameter".
Different species and populations can come from different environments.
However, many blackwater Apistogramma will appreciate:
- Soft water
- Low conductivity/TDS
- Low carbonate hardness
- Stable temperature
- Slightly acidic to acidic water
- Humic-rich water
Some species can be maintained and bred successfully at pH around 6 or even higher, while others perform much better when the water is considerably softer and more acidic.
For example, Tom's observations of Apistogramma cf. bitaeniata describe naturally shallow blackwater habitats with pH below 5.5, while other species such as Apistogramma cinilabra have been successfully bred across a much wider pH range.
This is why species-specific research matters.
If you're keeping a particular wild form or locality fish, try to find information about that fish rather than simply following a generic Apistogramma care sheet.
Temperature
A temperature around the mid-to-high 20s °C works well for many tropical Apistogramma.
However, temperature should also be considered alongside the particular species, water chemistry and breeding goals.
Some species naturally experience warmer conditions, while research and observations on other Apistogramma indicate that temperatures around 25ā27°C can be favourable for maintaining a balanced sex ratio in offspring.
As always, stability is more important than constantly chasing a particular number.
Filtration and Water Movement
Apistogramma generally don't need a river running through the aquarium.
Many species are found in shallow areas with little or no noticeable water movement.
A gentle sponge filter or a suitably sized filtration system with controlled flow is often ideal.
The water should be clean and well oxygenated, but avoid turning the aquarium into a high-flow environment.
If your Apistogramma are constantly fighting the current, you've probably got too much flow.
Lighting
Apistogramma generally look their best under subdued lighting.
This also makes sense when you look at their natural environment.
Dense vegetation, overhanging plants, roots and leaf litter can create areas of shade throughout the habitat.
Floating plants are particularly useful because they break up the light and provide additional cover.
A heavily planted aquarium isn't essential, but shade and structure are.
And once you add some leaf litter and tannins, the darker water naturally helps create the environment these fish seem to love.
Botanicals and Leaf Litter
This is one of the easiest ways to transform an ordinary aquarium into an Apistogramma habitat.
Add natural leaf litter.
Indian Almond Leaves, beech, oak and other suitable botanicals can all be used depending on what is available and appropriate for your aquarium.
Leaves provide:
- Cover
- Foraging areas
- Additional territory boundaries
- Natural spawning surfaces
- Humic substances
- A more natural appearance
- A food source for microorganisms
Tom's field and aquarium observations repeatedly describe Apistogramma living among dead leaves, and several breeding reports specifically mention the benefits of leaf litter and humic-rich water.
As the leaves break down, they also become home to microorganisms and biofilm which can provide an additional natural food source.
This is one of the reasons we love botanicals so much.
The aquarium becomes more than decoration. It becomes an ecosystem.
Give Them Somewhere to Spawn
Apistogramma are generally cave spawners.
Coconut caves, ceramic caves, wood cavities, seed pods and other suitable natural structures can all provide spawning locations.
Ideally, provide multiple caves rather than just one.
This allows the fish to choose their preferred spawning site and gives females somewhere to retreat if another fish enters their territory.
The female will often select and prepare the spawning site before laying her eggs inside.
Once spawning occurs, her behaviour can change dramatically.
That cute little yellow dwarf cichlid that was happily swimming around the aquarium can suddenly become an extremely territorial parent.
And that's exactly what you want to see.
Choosing Your Apistogramma
Before buying Apistogramma, research the particular species.
Different species can have very different behaviour.
Some are relatively peaceful.
Others can be highly territorial.
Some species naturally form pairs, while others can show polygamous behaviour where a male breeds with multiple females.
Tom's observations of species such as A. baenschi and several other Apistogramma demonstrate how breeding behaviour can differ considerably between species.
If you're keeping a group, make sure your aquarium is large enough and heavily structured enough to accommodate multiple territories.
Feeding Apistogramma
Apistogramma are small predators and naturally spend much of their time searching through the substrate and leaf litter for tiny prey.
A varied diet is ideal.
Good foods include:
- Newly hatched brine shrimp
- Frozen baby brine shrimp
- Daphnia
- Cyclops
- Microworms
- Small live foods
- Grindal,white, blackworms
- Quality small granules
Newly hatched brine shrimp are particularly useful when conditioning adults for breeding and when feeding fry.
Tom's observations show that many Apistogramma readily take small live foods such as Artemia nauplii, Cyclops, water fleas and microworms.
Don't rely on one food.
A varied diet produces healthier fish and is particularly important when preparing fish for breeding.
Conditioning Apistogramma for Breeding
If your goal is breeding, don't immediately start manipulating the aquarium.
First, get the fish healthy.
Provide:
Good water + good food + low stress + suitable habitat.
Condition adults with regular small meals of quality food.
Live and frozen foods can be particularly useful.
Keep water quality high and avoid large, sudden changes in temperature or chemistry.
Once the fish are settled, the natural behaviours usually follow.
How Apistogramma Breed
One of the most fascinating things about Apistogramma is the relationship between the male and female during breeding.
The female will often become more intensely coloured, particularly yellow, as she approaches spawning.
She selects a suitable cave and cleans the inside.
Eggs are normally attached to the roof or walls of the cave.
The female then guards the eggs and becomes highly territorial.
In many species, the female takes the primary role in caring for the eggs and fry.
Tom's detailed observations of different species show that breeding strategies can vary, but cave spawning followed by intensive female brood care is common throughout the genus.
What Happens After Spawning?
This is where you need to pay attention.
The female will usually become extremely protective of her cave.
She may chase away the male, other females and any other fish that come too close.
Depending on the species and aquarium size, this can sometimes become dangerous for the male.
Don't assume that because the fish lived peacefully together yesterday, they will continue to do so after spawning.
Watch the fish.
If one fish is being relentlessly attacked and has nowhere to escape, you may need to intervene.
This is one of the biggest reasons we recommend heavily structured aquariums with plenty of caves, plants, wood and leaf litter.
The aquarium should provide escape routes and separate territories.
Apistogramma Eggs and Fry
The exact timing varies between species and temperature, but eggs generally hatch after a few days.
The female may then move the larvae between different hiding places before they become free swimming.
Once the fry are free swimming, they need very small food.
Newly hatched Artemia nauplii are one of the best foods you can provide.
Other suitable first foods can include microworms and other appropriately sized live foods.
Feed small amounts regularly.
The fry are tiny, so don't expect them to immediately take the same foods as the adults.
Raising Apistogramma Fry
Water quality is extremely important when raising fry.
Small, regular water changes are generally preferable to allowing waste to build up.
However, avoid dramatic changes in temperature or water chemistry.
Tom's breeding observations highlight that sudden changes in pH and temperature can negatively affect fry development, while good feeding and regular water changes using suitable soft, humic-rich water can produce rapid growth.
The combination of:
Clean water + stable parameters + lots of food + low stress
is the key to growing healthy juveniles.
Do You Need to Remove the Parents?
Not always.
This is one of the great things about Apistogramma.
In a properly designed aquarium, the female can raise her fry alongside the parents for some time.
Whether this works depends heavily on the species, aquarium size, tank mates and individual fish.
Some males will help defend the territory.
Some won't.
Some may even eat eggs or fry.
Again, watch the fish rather than following a rule that applies to every Apistogramma.
If aggression becomes excessive, be prepared to separate fish.
Tank Mates
Apistogramma are best kept with peaceful fish that occupy different areas of the aquarium.
Small tetras and pencilfish can work particularly well.
Tom's observations mention pencilfish and other small characins as natural "dither fish" for certain Apistogramma species.
Avoid large, aggressive or overly boisterous tank mates.
A large community fish constantly racing around the aquarium can completely change the behaviour of your Apistogramma.
If breeding is the priority, a species-only aquarium is often the easiest option.
Common Mistakes With Apistogramma
Keeping them in hard, alkaline water
Some Apistogramma are surprisingly adaptable, but many blackwater species will do much better in soft, low-mineral water.
Too much flow
These are not fish that need a washing machine for an aquarium.
Keep the flow gentle.
Bright lighting with no cover
A brightly lit, completely open aquarium can make Apistogramma nervous and shy.
Add floating plants, wood and leaf litter.
Not enough caves
One cave isn't necessarily enough.
Give them options.
No visual barriers
A tank with nothing but an open sand bed leaves fish constantly looking at one another.
Break up the aquarium.
Too many fish
Apistogramma may be small, but their personalities certainly aren't.
Especially when breeding.
Treating every species the same
This is probably the biggest mistake.
There are many different Apistogramma, and their natural environments and behaviour can vary significantly.

For Apistogramma, that means creating a miniature South American habitat.
Think:
Fine sand.
Twisted wood.
Leaf litter.
Natural caves.
Soft water.
Tannins.
Gentle flow.
Subdued lighting.
And most importantly...
A mature aquarium.
When you get the environment right, Apistogramma become much more than colourful fish sitting in a tank.
They explore.
They sift through the sand.
They hunt between leaves.
They establish territories.
They court.
They spawn.
And eventually, if everything comes together, you get to watch a tiny female Apistogramma lead a cloud of fry around your aquarium.
That is what makes these fish so addictive.
Final Thoughts
Apistogramma aren't necessarily difficult fish.
They simply require you to think a little differently.
Don't focus only on pH.
Don't focus only on TDS.
Don't focus only on temperature.
Instead, look at the whole environment.
Give them clean, stable and appropriate water. Provide fine sand, natural structure, leaf litter and spawning caves. Feed them a varied diet and give them enough space to establish territories.
Most importantly, research the particular species you are keeping.
The natural habitats documented by Tom Christoffersen demonstrate just how diverse Apistogramma can be, with some species coming from extremely acidic, mineral-poor blackwater while others prove much more adaptable in aquariums.
And if you're already keeping Apistogramma, don't be afraid to experiment with creating a more natural environment.
Add some leaves.
Add some wood.
Dim the lights.
Give them a few caves.
Let the aquarium mature.
