Why A Blackwater Aquarium?
The idea behind blackwater aquariums is to simulate the water chemistry of Amazonian blackwater and have physical characteristics of the Amazon. This means the aquarium water needs to be low in minerals and aquascaped with live aquatic plants, aquarium wood and organic matter (leaves) that will decompose.
Over time the aquarium will age, meaning the decomposing plant material will release natural acids and other compounds, causing the water to become tea-colored.
A blackwater aquarium is similar to a planted aquarium. The main task is maintaining a habitat for the plants along with a controlled decomposition of leaf litter.
Acid-loving freshwater fish are added to provide colour, movement and interest to the biotope. The fish also add nutrients and contribute carbon dioxide for the plants, creating a balanced ecosystem.
Australian & International Botanicals
We pride ourselves in sourcing most produce from Australia, we work with quite a few producers and gardeners around Australia. This means we only import products if its legal to do so, and if they can't be sourced in Australia. All our botanicals are tried and tested before they end up on our website. This too ensure livestock is not negatively impacted. Shrimp fish and snails where used too ensure this. All our Australian Botanicals are pest and pollution free and are organically sourced.
Apistogramma
Apistogramma are an excellent addition to any black water setup. They come in quite a large variety of collors and shapes. When we did our initial trials with Australian natives these fish where used as our 'Labrats'
We are currently focussing on breeding Apistogramma, other dwarf cichlids, micro fish and Shrimp. Once the fish are ready they will be available for sale here. Please keep in mind that all fish available will be bred in house so a waiting time might apply.
Inspiration
Our inspiration mainly came from the frustration of not being able to import/buy produce from websites like Tannin Aquatics. This understandably is a bio security risk in Australia as it involves plant matter. Luckily for us there are lots of Aussie botanicals. And most proved to be very attractive in a black water system. We are working with a few foreign products that are legal to import like Cholla wood. For this we obtained a Import Permit.
